Accra, Cape Coast, and Elmina tour (US $140.00, with lunch included)

TOUR OVERVIEW: Canopy walk, right in the deep forest of the Kakum National Park: one of the world's highest suspended rope bridges held by steel cables. Perched 37 meters (120 feet) above the ground, you will have a breathtaking view of the rainforest. Trees will reveal their tops rather than their trunks! In the afternoon, visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European building in Africa, erected by the Portuguese in the 15th century. At different times, the castle has been used as a warehouse to trade gold, ivory, and, eventually, slaves.
The castle is the result of successive extensions and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Outside the castle, is a wonderful village with lots of large, colorful fishing boats—every day these canoes are guided by skilled fishermen across strong ocean waves and currents, "fighting" to earn a living. In the old town, we will see the Posuban, the shrines of the old "Asafo companies"—the warriors who used to put their offerings on the large colorful statues. The alleys in the old town have a very lively atmosphere, bringing us back to a time when Elmina was a busy colonial town.

CAPE COAST CASTLE: Cape Coast Castle is one of the largest of the castles built by European powers in Ghana. It began as a trade lodge constructed by the Portuguese in 1555 on a part of the Gold Coast, which later became known as the Cape Coast. In 1653, following Sweden’s conquest of the Cape Coast, the Swedish Africa Company constructed a permanent wooden fortress for trade in timber and gold. It is open to the public and is currently a historical museum with a Ghanaian arts and crafts gift shop, and it is the regional headquarters of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

ELMINA: Elmina Castle was established by the Portuguese in 1482 as So Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine) in Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). Elmina and Elmina Castle were the first trading posts built on the Gulf of Guinea, and so they are the oldest European buildings in existence below the Sahara. It was first established as a trade settlement but later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. Today, Elmina Castle is a popular historical site and was a major filming location for Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film "Cobra Verde." It is an extremely popular destination for African American tourists seeking to connect with their heritage and a powerful reminder of the history of the slave trade.

ELMINA BAY RESORT: Located in Elmina, 4 km from Elmina Castle, Elmina Bay Resort provides accommodations with a restaurant. We will have our lunch here.

KAKUM NATIONAL PARK: The park made up of mostly undisturbed virgin rainforest and is one of the most famous national parks in Ghana. It protects plants and animals from the African tropical forest. The trails provide self-guided day hiking opportunities where you may sight some of the over 200 bird species represented: the parrot, bee-eaters, blue plantain-eaters, hornbills, and kingfishers. The dense vegetation provides cover for globally endangered species such as the forest elephant and bongo, the largest forest antelope, as well as various types of monkeys.
The Canopy Walkway, suspended 30 meters above the ground, provides a treetop view of the beautiful forest.
